Role game: Sakana

Pêcheur professionnel - la pêche au filet - Fiche de rôle de "Sakana : dilemme en mer"Since the dawn of time, fishing is a fundamental activity: thanks to it, we can eat fish and other seafood. However, contrary to ancient beliefs, fish stocks are not unlimited. It is necessary to well-manage our natural resource and not over-exploit it, to leave enough fish in the sea so they can reproduce and ensure future fisheries.

But how to protect fish from overfishing? Various management measures can be used to protect both the natural resources and the fishing activities, but finding the right balance is not always easy …

With SAKANA, put yourself in fishermen’s, scientist’s or manager’s shoes, and take the right decisions to save the fisheries and the resources. The future of the sea is in your hands!

I created and developed in 2008 “Sakana : Dilemme en merCreative Commons License, a role playing game dealing with sustainable fishing and resource managament, promoting the concertation of various sea-stakeholders around a common objective: keeping the resource in a healthy state while sustaining the economic and recreative fishing activities.

Sakana

It helps the players understanding the issues and problematics of interactions between commercial and recreational fishing and fishing management regulations, such as quotas, seasonnal closure and also marine reserves / MPAs.

I presented Sakana with a great success many times, mainly during scientific divulgation’s exhibitions: at the Montpellier’s aquarium , during open-doors day at Ifremer research institute in Brest (2009), during various Science festival, and also at the Fêtes de la Mer, in Boulogne-sur-Mer (2015). I am now collaborating with the “Agence des Aires Marines Protegees” in Boulogne-sur-Mer to adapt Sakana to their marine environment and to edit the game for public events! Great new!!

You can see a video where I explain why I developed this game and how it works: “Sakana : dilemme en mer” (video from Michel Gouillou, Ifremer, in French).
